Excellence in Graduate Research Award

Excellence in Graduate Research Award (EGRA) (formerly known as the Graduate Student Showcase)

The purpose of this award is to provide a high-profile opportunity for graduate students near the completion of their degrees to present an in-depth overview of their thesis research at the current year’s Joint Annual Meeting (JAM).

Where possible, four prizes are conferred each year. Recipients are awarded:

  • An opportunity to present their work with an extended (30 minute) talk at the JAM
  • A $500 prize
  • An Ed Becker Travel Award
  • A complimentary ESC membership with access to The Canadian Entomologist

Application

To be eligible for this award applicants must:

  1. Have defended or plan to defend their thesis within one year of the meeting
  2. Be the principal author and investigator of the presented work

Application packages should be submitted to the Student and Early Career Professional Affairs Committee (SEPAC) by email to students@esc-sec.ca and must include:

  • An abstract (up to 250-words) describing the proposed presentation highlighting their work
  • A one-page (single-spaced, 12-point font) outline of their research, including the rationale/significance, methodology, and results to date
  • A CV that includes a list of previous conference presentations and other presentation experience

Additionally, applicants must arrange for their principal supervisor to submit a letter of support containing:

  • The applicant’s anticipated date of defense
  • Comments on proposed presentation
  • Support of the applicant’s presentation and research abilities

The deadline for applications is the first Friday in August prior to the Joint Annual Meeting for that year. Applicants should select the “Excellence in Graduate Research Award” option during abstract submission/registration.  Conference website instructions take precedence for registration in the case of conflicting information.

Unsuccessful EGRA applicants will automatically be entered into the President’s Prize competition if eligible. All submitted abstracts will be forwarded to the conference organizers following the selection of EGRA recipients.
