The nominee will be presented by the Board to members as part of a slate for election at the next Annual Meeting of the Society in fall 2025. Members are reminded that, under By-Law 16 and Standing Rule VI 2), they may submit additional nominations for this position, as long as they are submitted to the Secretary at least 21 days prior to the Annual Member Meeting and are signed by not less than 5% of the members of the Society. ESC Member Plebiscite 2025 – Director-at-Large

Chris Cutler

Chris CutlerI was raised in a small outport town on the island of Newfoundland. I hold degrees from Memorial University (BSc Hon.,’97), Simon Fraser University (MPM, ‘02), and the University of Guelph (PhD, ‘06) and am currently a Professor in the Faculty of Agriculture at Dalhousie University, where I have been since 2007. I have broad entomological interests, but most of my research has been in insect pest management, ecotoxicology, ecology, and pollinator risk assessment. I have published more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles that have been cited more than 4500 times, directly received more than $3M in research funding (PI or co-applicant on grants totaling >$16M), and trained dozens of graduate and undergraduate students and post-doctoral fellows who have achieved success in academia, government, and the private sector. I have received numerous research awards as a professor, including recognition from the ESC (Gordon Hewitt Award, 2013), the Agricultural Institute of Canada (2010 AIC Sustainable Futures Award), Dalhousie’s Faculty of Agriculture (Research Excellence, 2014), the 25th H.R. MacCarthy Lecture in Pest Management (2016), and a Special Visiting Research Professor Fellowship from CNPq (Brazil, 2014-2016).

I am a 20+ year member of the ESC, having previously served as co-Chair of the 2011 ESC Annual Meeting in Halifax, Director at Large (2014-2017), and on various committees (Elections Committee, Publications Committee, EDI Committee). I have been a member of the Acadian Entomological Society (AES) since 2008, serving as President 2013-2015 and 2021-2022, and as Vice-President 2011-2013 and 2020-2021. I have been a Subject Editor for The Canadian Entomologist since 2012, and an Associate Editor for the Journal of the AES since 2014.

Having recently completed 7+ years in Faculty and University administration (Associate Dean Research and Graduate Studies, 2017-2024), I am eager to more actively re-engage with ESC. Attendance at recent Annual Meetings in Saskatoon and Québec City with my students has reminded me why I am so fond of ESC – the enthusiasm of ESC members for their subject matter; the quality and importance of the science produced by its members; the rich history, professionalism, and impact of the ESC; and the comradery among the membership – and makes me want to again contribute formally to ESC operations. Serving ESC in past positions has been enjoyable and rewarding, and I believe my experiences in research, administration, service, governance, and leadership have positioned me well for the role of ESC Director at Large. It would be a pleasure to again contribute to the management and growth of our Society and serve you as a member of the Board of Directors of the ESC.

ESC Member Plebiscite 2025 – Societal Director (Second Vice-President)

Julien Saguez

I have over 20 years of experience in entomological research. I completed my Ph.D. in France in 2007. From 2008-2015, I joined Dr. Charles Vincent’s laboratory (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada), first as a two-year postdoc, and then as a research assistant. I studied the tritrophic interactions between leafhoppers, grapevines, and phytoplasmas in collaboration with Dr. Chrystel Olivier (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Saskatoon). In 2015, I joined the CÉROM (Centre de Recherche sur les grains) in Saint-Mathieu-de-Beloeil, QC. I currently develop projects on different field crop pests (ex: wireworms, several moth species) and conduct projects on invasive pests associated with corn and soybean in a context of climate change. I am also involved in the Quebec Pest Monitoring Network, the Great Lake and Maritimes Pest Monitoring Network, and the Corn Rootworm Adult Monitoring Network, with several colleagues in North America.

I am interested in new technologies. My first project in Canada used electropenetrography (EPG) technique to conduct studies on the feeding behavior of leafhoppers and aphids. In my current research, I used automated traps to monitor different insect species.

I have co-authored several scientific communications — two patents, ca. 30 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 7 book chapters, 5 technical bulletins and guides, non-peer-reviewed papers, conferences proceedings, ca. 50 oral presentations, and ca. 60 posters — and have presented them in provincial, national, and international meetings.

I am member of ESC since 2008. I attended my first ESC meeting in Montreal in 2006 and participated to almost all ESC meetings ever since. I published articles and book reviews in the Bulletin of ESC. I was involved in the organization of the ESC-SEQ Joint meetings in Montreal (2015) and Quebec City (2024). I also co-organized a symposium in Vancouver in 2022 (ESA, ESC, ESBC). I am also involved in the ESC Public Education – Science Policy Committee.

I am member of the SEQ since 2008. I was member of the executive committee of SEQ from 2014 to 2017, being President in 2015-2016. I have been involved in several committees of the SEQ, notably on the committee for the emblematic insect and on the Editorial committee of the liaison journal Antennae. I was involved in the organization of several annual meetings, including during the COVID pandemic with several challenges (ex: virtual presentations).

I am member of the Entomological Society of America (ESA) since 2016. I was elected on the Board of the International Branch of ESA (2018-2024) and was the representative of the International Branch to the Governing Board of ESA (2018-2024), serving ESA in several committees, notably in the Common Names committee and the Insect Calendar committee.

I am member of The Société de Protection des Plantes du Québec and served on the Governing Board for 3 years (2020-2023).

I am also passionate about promoting entomology. Since 2008, I have participated in several exhibitions, and I have visited schools and have given courses to children of Southern Quebec. In that context, I initiated ca. 4,500 young students to entomology.

Based on my experiences with different societies, I believe I have developed strong knowledge and skills regarding the functioning of Governing boards. As Second Vice President, I would strive to enhance the visibility of ESC’s work, strengthen collaborations with other societies in Canada and abroad, and increase public engagement with entomology. I am particularly interested in expanding ESC’s outreach and educational initiatives, ensuring that we continue to inspire future generations of entomologists.
