ESC and COVID–19: Update 15 April 2020

2020 International Congress of Entomology (ICE)

On 25 March 2020, it was announced that ICE would be postponed until 2021, and this was communicated to ESC members by Eblast on 27 March. As this was past the deadline for refunding of registrations (1 March 2020), refunds are not available following the postponement announcement. ESC has learned that expenses already incurred by ICE exceed the total of registrations received before the postponement decision, and so there simply is no available money to refund. Those who have registered will be able to use their registration in 2021; those who are unable to do so can transfer their registration to someone else. ICE Student Travel Awards

Three students were awarded $850 each towards the costs of attending ICE on condition that they registered and submitted an abstract for a presentation at the Congress. Awardees will receive their awards this year, if they have fulfilled those conditions.

National Insect Appreciation Day (NAIAD)

8 June 2020 is the second annual NAIAD. Originally, it had been planned to make it bigger and better than the first NAIAD with more group activities focusing on insects. As a result of COVID-19, no group interactions will be promoted for the 2020 NAIAD. The scaled-back event will feature the insect picture challenge (see https://esc-sec.ca/entomology-resources/education-and-outreach/). Regional entomological societies may feature other virtual activities, or promote activities that can be done individually while social distancing.

Print subscriptions to The Canadian Entomologist (TCE)

As communicated to ESC members by Eblast on 26 March 2020, COVID-19 has forced Cambridge University Press, the publisher of TCE, to suspend production of print issues of all the journals they publish. On-line issues of TCE and the manuscript processing process are currently on schedule, although disruptions resulting from work-at-home and similar precautions may slow manuscript processing in the future. The publisher has assured ESC that, once the COVID-19 crisis is past, the missing print issues will be printed and mailed to those who subscribe to them.

Meeting Announcement

The 2020 Joint Annual Meeting (JAM) of the Entomological Society of Canada and the Entomological Society of Alberta will be held on Oct 18-21, 2020 at the Carriage House Inn in Calgary, Alberta. We are pleased to announce our keynote speaker, Dr. Laura Lavine, Professor and Chair of the Department of Entomology at Washington State University. Dr. Lavine specializes in the evolution of adaption, and how insects can rapidly adjust to their environments. Travel awards for the international congress of entomology

ESC is offering three awards of $850 each to help support ESC student members attending the International Congress of Entomology (ICE) in Helsinki, Finland, 19–24 July 2020.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

· Be an undergraduate or graduate student in a Canadian University

· At the time of application have paid ESC membership for the 2020 membership year

· Have submitted an abstract to ICE

Applications

Applications must be received before Midnight of Friday 22 November 2019. Click here to see the attachment for the details of how to apply.

Process

Applications will be reviewed by Student Award Committee of the Society. Selection of awardees will be based on academic merit and quality of the abstract.

Note that student early-bird registration is €450 until 31 December 2019 and €500 thereafter (€650 for walk-on registrations).  The ESC Student Awards Committee will inform the three winning applicants before the early-bird registration deadline.

Payment of each award will be made as a reimbursement after ICE, upon receipt of documentary proof of attendance at the meeting.

2019 Pest Management Research Report – call for submissions

Dear Researchers in Integrated Pest Management,

The Pest Management Centre compiles the Pest Management Research Report (PMRR) for the Canadian Phytopathological Society (CPS), in conjunction with the Entomological Society of Canada. The PMRR facilitates the exchange of information on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) among persons involved in research and advisory services on IPM of insect pests and plant diseases of importance to the agri-food industry in Canada.

The PMRR is published annually as a compilation of research reports by federal and provincial government, university and industry research and advisory personnel. These reports aid the development of recommendations for insect and disease management programs throughout Canada. They report on all aspects of pest management, including cultivar and management responses, and are available to support the registration of pest control products. The PMRR is published only in electronic format. The 1995-2018 editions of the PMRR are available on the CPS website for viewing and download at http://phytopath.ca/publication/pmrr/.

Please find the invitation to submit research reports for the 2019 edition of the PMRR. Also encourage any of your colleagues who conduct research into IPM to submit research reports.
