{"id":3744,"date":"2012-06-25T06:00:41","date_gmt":"2012-06-25T06:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/esc-sec.ca\/wp\/2012\/06\/25\/esc-joins-effort-to-save-the-experimental-lakes-area-ela\/"},"modified":"2019-11-14T21:47:39","modified_gmt":"2019-11-14T21:47:39","slug":"esc-joins-effort-to-save-the-experimental-lakes-area-ela","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/esc-sec.ca\/fr\/2012\/06\/25\/esc-joins-effort-to-save-the-experimental-lakes-area-ela\/","title":{"rendered":"ESC Joins Effort to Save the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On June 15, 2012, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uoguelph.ca\/ses\/users\/rhallett\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rebecca Hallett<\/a>, Chair of the Science Policy &amp; Education Committee, sent a\u00a0letter on behalf of the ESC to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pm.gc.ca\/eng\/pm.asp?featureId=7&amp;pageId=27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prime Minister Stephen Harper<\/a>,\u00a0Hon.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/keithashfieldmp.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keith\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/keithashfieldmp.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ashfield<\/a>\u00a0(Minister of Fisheries and Oceans) and Hon.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.peterkent.ca\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peter\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.peterkent.ca\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kent<\/a>\u00a0(Minister of the Environment) asking the Government\u00a0to reverse their decision to close the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.experimentallakesarea.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Experimental Lakes Area<\/a>. The letter was cc\u2019d to <a href=\"http:\/\/saveela.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Save ELA<\/a>, and MPs <a href=\"http:\/\/elizabethmay.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elizabeth May<\/a> (Green Party Leader), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ndp.ca\/home#enter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tom Mulcair<\/a>\u00a0(New Democratic Party Leader)\u00a0and Hon.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bobrae.liberal.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bob Rae<\/a> (Liberal Party Leader). The ESC\u00a0was also added as a signator to an <a href=\"http:\/\/saveeladotorg.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/05\/coalition-to-save-ela-newspaper-ad-june-16.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ad in support of saving the ELA printed in the Globe &amp; Mail\u00a0and the Winnipeg Free Press<\/a> on Saturday June 16.<\/p>\n<p>You can read the <a href=\"http:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/06\/esc_ela_supportletter_15jun2012.pdf\">ESC&rsquo;s letter to the government here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone interested in learning more about the ELA and\/or adding your individual\u00a0support to this initiative, should <a href=\"http:\/\/saveela.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">visit the Save ELA site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">Responses:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On Monday June 19, a reply was received from Elizabeth May, leader of the Green Party\u00a0of Canada, expressing her dismay at the closure of the ELA and her intention to table petitions in\u00a0the House of Commons supporting the continued operation of the ELA in hopes of reversing the\u00a0government\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>You can <a href=\"http:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/06\/may-response.pdf\">read Elizabeth May&rsquo;s response here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday June 29, a reply was received from Hon.
