After <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seq.qc.ca\/english\/activites\/insemb_eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a public vote held by the Montreal Insectarium in 1998<\/a>,\u00a0the White Admiral butterfly (<em>Limenitis arthemis<\/em>) was selected as the provincial insect, which was later ratified by the National Assembly of Quebec.<\/p>\n<p>It seems only two nations have insects as officially recognized symbols: Mexico with the grasshopper as its National Arthropod (perhaps in honour of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chapulines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chapulines<\/a>, grasshoppers in the genus\u00a0<em>Sphenarium<\/em> which are a common food item in several regions) and <a href=\"http:\/\/sundaytimes.lk\/100328\/News\/nws_16.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sri Lanka, which designated a National Butterfly<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Troides_darsius\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an endemic swallowtail butterfly,\u00a0<em>Troides darsius<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>As the Entomological Society of Canada &amp; the Entomological Society of Ontario approach their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entsocont.ca\/files\/files\/Journal\/2009\/140_46_53.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">joint 150th anniversary<\/a>, perhaps it&rsquo;s time we start thinking about choosing an official insect for Canada.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/04\/cropped-esclogoprint2inch2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9\" title=\"Entomological Society of Canada Logo\" src=\"http:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/04\/cropped-esclogoprint2inch2.jpg\" alt=\"Entomological Society of Canada Logo\" width=\"155\" height=\"155\" \/><\/a>The obvious choice would be the insect adorning the ESC logo, an ice-crawler in the family <a href=\"http:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/244864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grylloblattidae<\/a>. Canadian entomologists\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/E.M._Walker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edmund Murton Walker<\/a> (who would later found the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rom.on.ca\/collections\/collections\/invertzoo.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Royal Ontario Museum&rsquo;s invertebrate collection<\/a>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/sce.library.utoronto.ca\/index.php\/Kurata,_T.B.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T.B. Kurata<\/a> first discovered\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/410970\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grylloblatta campodeiformis<\/a><\/em> in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta and placed it in its own, new order, the Grylloblattaria (although it is now treated as a suborder within the Notoptera).<\/p>\n<p>Other choices might include any of the insects featured on the logos of the provincial\/regional entomological societies in Canada:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sfu.ca\/groups\/esbc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Entomological Society of British Columbia<\/a> &#8211;\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sfu.ca\/groups\/esbc\/about\/boreus-elegans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boreus elegans<\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sfu.ca\/groups\/esbc\/about\/boreus-elegans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> a winter scorpionfly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.entsocalberta.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Entomological Society of Alberta<\/a> &#8211; a moth (if anyone knows the species, let us know).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usask.ca\/biology\/ess\/ESS.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Entomological Society of Saskatchewan<\/a> &#8211; a short-horned grasshopper (if anyone knows the species, let us know).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/home.cc.umanitoba.ca\/~fieldspg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Entomological Society of Manitoba<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/8190\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Big Sand Tiger Beetle (<em>Cicindela formosa<\/em>)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.entsocont.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Entomological Society of Ontario<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/540\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Monarch Butterfly (<em>Danaus plexippus<\/em>)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seq.qc.ca\/\">Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 d&rsquo;entomologie du Qu\u00e9bec<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/484\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">White Admiral Butterfly (<em>Limenitis arthemis<\/em>)<\/a>(?).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.acadianes.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Acadian Entomological Society<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/33200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple Maggot Fly (<em>Rhagoletis pomonella<\/em>)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We don&rsquo;t want to limit your imagination to just these insects of course! Perhaps you think our national insect should tie in with other national symbols, like the beaver. In that case, the <a href=\"http:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/96129\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beaver Parasite Beetle (<em>Platypsyllus castoris<\/em>)<\/a> might make an excellent candidate.
