These spiders have stereotyped courtship behaviour involving stridulation of an organ located dorsally between the cephalothorax and abdomen.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For approximately eight months, I studied the courtship behaviour and chemical communication between male and female false widow spiders, <a href=\"http:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/6932\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Steatoda grossa<\/em><\/a>. Prior to studying them in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfu.ca\/biology\/people\/profiles\/gries.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prof. Gerhard Gries\u2019<\/a> lab at Simon Fraser University, I had never even heard of this species!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1469\" style=\"width: 670px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/10\/img_2163.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1469\" class=\"wp-image-1469 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/10\/img_2163.jpg?w=660\" alt=\"IMG_2163\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1469\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Female <em>Steatoda grossa<\/em> on her web.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>My mentor\u00a0<a href=\"www.spiderbytes.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Catherine Scott<\/a> and I had collected juvenile and mature false widow spiders around the basement of the biology wing at SFU&#8230; and let\u2019s just say we didn\u2019t have a lack of specimens to collect. Almost every baseboard we turned over or corner we searched, we would find these little guys and collect them individually into petri dishes. These formed the nucleus of our laboratory colony which we reared for behavioural experiments.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/10\/img_2209.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1470\" src=\"https:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/10\/img_2209.jpg?w=660\" alt=\"IMG_2209\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A \u00a0common nickname for <em>Steatoda grossa<\/em> is the \u201ccupboard spider,\u201d which I find extremely appropriate considering these spiders seem to love dwelling in dark corners.
