This was a male western yellowjacket,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/12981\/bgimage?from=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Vespula pensylvanica<\/em><\/a>, and he was in rough shape. Even here in Vancouver, wintry weather comes this time of year, and we have had freezing nights for almost a week.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1490\" style=\"width: 570px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/11\/img_4125.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1490\" class=\"wp-image-1490 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/11\/img_4125.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4125\" width=\"560\" height=\"393\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1490\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Males are easy to recognize, as they have long, 13 segmented antennae, and a long gaster with 7 apparent segments. Females have 6 segments on the gaster, and 12-segmented antennae.\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1491\" style=\"width: 570px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/11\/img_4056.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1491\" class=\"wp-image-1491 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/11\/img_4056.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4056\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1491\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">With the freezing weather we have had, this male was not really able to fly, so he was cooperative for some photos.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1492\" style=\"width: 570px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/11\/img_4068.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1492\" class=\"wp-image-1492 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/11\/img_4068.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4068\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1492\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I have seen male yellowjackets later in the year than this, usually when their nest is within a heated home.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1493\" style=\"width: 570px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/11\/img_4098.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1493\" class=\"wp-image-1493 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/11\/img_4098.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4098\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1493\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Further south, western yellowjackets have year-round colonies, with multiple queens, but here in Canada they generally conform to the single-foundress colony mode, with a single queen starting a colony in the spring, and dying off in the winter after producing males and new queens.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1494\" style=\"width: 570px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/11\/img_4094.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1494\" class=\"wp-image-1494 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/11\/img_4094.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4094\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1494\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">After this session, I found a nice sunstruck patch of moss, and laid down some honey (which I keep in a vial for ant photography) and let him have a last meal in the sun before the cold of night came to end his life.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; On Friday, while walking to work I found this male wasp, cold and still on the pavement.
