The most common of these are in the genus <em>Agulla<\/em>, and this morning I found several female <em>Agulla<\/em> when out for a walk at Mt. Tolmie in Victoria.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2279\" style=\"width: 730px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2279\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2279\" src=\"https:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/04\/img_7988.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7988\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2279\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The way the pronotum curls around the anterior of the elongated thorax like a little jacket is strangely pleasing.\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_2283\" style=\"width: 2010px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2283\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2283\" src=\"https:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/04\/img_6813.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6813\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2283\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Snakeflies have a fully motile pupal stage, something I found out just the other day, finding this pupa in a decaying branch of Garry Oak.\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_2287\" style=\"width: 2010px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2287\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2287\" src=\"https:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/04\/img_5712.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_5712\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1334\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2287\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here is a freshly-emerged snakefly I found in Oregon a few weeks ago. Note how the wings appear milky and the antennae are not fully hardened.\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_2291\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2291\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2291\" src=\"https:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/04\/img_7887.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7887\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2291\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I had hoped to catch these against a blazing orange dawn, but like so many dawns on the west coast, today was rather cloudy.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_2295\" style=\"width: 730px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2295\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2295\" src=\"https:\/\/escsecblog.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/04\/img_7948.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7948\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2295\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Against the mossy bedrock of the Garry Oak meadow, the female snakefly blends in quite well.\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One of the most surprising things I have learned about snakeflies over the years is that the larvae have a very effective reverse locomotion that allows them to quickly back away from danger.
