Tribute to Jeremy McNeil (1944-2024)

Jeremy McNeil was born on November 20th, 1944 in Tunbridge, England. The following year his family moved to Newfoundland, Canada. Jeremy returned to England for high school and worked for two years as a hospital orderly and wine merchant in London. He returned to Canada for his undergraduate studies at the University of Western Ontario, receiving a BSc in Honours Zoology in 1969. He received a PhD in Entomology and Ecology from the North Carolina State University in 1972. Soon after, he accepted a tenure track position at Laval University where he rose academically to Associate Professor in 1977 and Full Professor in 1982. After three decades at Laval he left for a Humboldt fellowship at Hamburg University where he worked with the legendary chemical ecologist Wittko Francke. Upon returning to Canada he accepted a full professorship with the University of Western Ontario, his Alma Mater, where he remained until his passing on July 18th, 2024.

Jeremy was one of the pillars of the International Society of Chemical Ecology (ISCE). He regularly attended ISCE annual meetings. Ironically he passed on the day of the latest meeting in Prague, the only annual meeting he missed in recent years. Jeremy was elected fellow of the Entomological Society of Canada in 1987, the Royal Society of Canada in 1999 and the Entomological Society of America in 2015. He was made an honorary fellow of the Royal Entomological Society in 2019. He received the ISCE silver medal in 2004 and was elected a corresponding member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences in 2018. Jeremy was awarded the Fry Medal from the Canadian Society of Zoologists in 2008, the gold medal from the Entomological Society of Canada in 1987. He was made a distinguished University Professor in 2014, and received the Helmuth Award in 2020 from the University of Western Ontario, and outstanding alumnus in 2011 from NC State, among many other accolades. Jeremy was president of ISCE in 1994, the Entomological Society of Canada in 1989, the Entomological Society of Quebec in 1978 and the Entomological Society of Ontario in 2013. He served as the International Secretary of the Royal Society of Canada from 2010-2017 and then as its president, 2019-2022. He created and served as co-chair, 2016 2022, of the Inter-American Network of Academies of Science.

Jeremy is known as one of the most, if not the most, engaging speakers in chemical ecology circles. His lectures delivered while wearing entomology themed t-shirts were thought-provoking, entertaining and stimulating, to say the least. As I stated on Twitter on the day of his passing, Jeremy is irreplaceable he was one of a kind. May Berenbaum described him as “a leader in thought, word and deed”. Jeremy received many accolades for actively engaging in public awareness of science including the Award for Science Promotion from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada 2016.

“Teaching small children, you know, getting them interested in science showing why it’s exciting but also why it’s important to them, and as I as I said to you earlier, one of the things I think is extremely important with the younger children is to make sure they understand that this is, science isn’t gender biased. Anybody can do science if they have the ability to do it and it shouldn’t be a question of whether you’re a boy or a girl, and the sooner we get that in the schools and get people to understand is, I mean, you know I’m in most of the academies in the Americas for example when you look at the number of women versus men it’s very gender biased and it isn’t towards women, in part because one only gets there when one is quite old and in the old days there were fewer people, fewer women in science, because they were told, oh, no, that’s not for you, and we need to get rid of that. And we need to get the best minds.” – Jeremy McNeil

His behavioral and chemical ecology research advanced our understanding of chemical cues, semiochemicals, mediating plant insect and host parasitoid interactions as well as the reproductive strategies of insects that migrate in response to predictable or unpredictable habitat changes. His research papers have been cited more than 8,000 times and have an H-index of 53. Last year alone, he produced five peer-reviewed articles. His legacy will be carried on by more than 60 graduate students and post-doctoral scholars he supervised. He also inspired the next generation of chemical ecologists. The world was a better place with Jeremy on it.

Bourses Ed Becker pour la réunion annuelle 2022

Bonjour aux membres étudiants de la SEC! Le conseil d’administration de la SEC a annoncé la disponibilité de 15 bourses de voyage Ed Becker d’une valeur de 500$ chacune pour permettre aux étudiants de se rendre à la réunion annuelle conjointe 2022 et de présenter une conférence ou une affiche dans la magnifique ville de Vancouver, en Colombie-Britannique, dans le centre de congrès surplombant le port. Les observations de phoques et de goélands sont presque garanties depuis les fenêtres de la salle de conférence. Un grand merci à la Fondation Dufault pour son généreux don qui nous permet de soutenir davantage les déplacements des étudiants à nos réunions.

Alors que les soumissions de résumés pour la réunion annuelle conjointe de 2022 en Colombie-Britannique sont en cours, l’appel à candidatures pour les bourses Ed Becker pour la réunion annuelle est également ouvert et la date limite de soumission est fixée au 3 juin 2022. Publication en libre accès gratuite dans The Canadian Entomologist!

Le 1er janvier 2022, le Réseau canadien de documentation pour la recherche (RCDR) a signé un accord de « lecture et publication » (« Read-Publish », R-P, en anglais) avec les Presses de l’Université de Cambridge (CUP), l’éditeur de The Canadian Entomologist (TCE). Les accords R-P permettent une lecture illimitée et une publication en libre accès sans frais pour les auteurs affiliés aux établissements participants. Le RCDR représente 42 établissements universitaires à travers le Canada. CUP a également signé des accords similaires avec un grand nombre d’institutions dans le monde.

Il s’agit d’un développement important pour TCE qui offre une opportunité sans précédent à nos membres et à toute autre personne associée à ces institutions de lire et de publier des articles en libre accès sans frais pour leurs programmes de recherche dans notre journal. L’affiliation de l’auteur de correspondance – y compris l’affiliation auxiliaire démontrée par une adresse électronique institutionnelle – détermine l’applicabilité de l’accord R-P.

Vitrine pour les étudiants des cycles supérieurs 2021 : Appel à candidatures 

Les étudiants des cycles supérieurs sont invités à poser leur candidature pour présenter leur recherche à la Vitrine pour les étudiants des cycles supérieurs qui se tiendra lors de la réunion annuelle conjointe de la Société d’entomologie du Canada et de la Société d’entomologie de l’Ontario (15-18 novembre 2021). L’objectif de cette vitrine est d’offrir aux étudiants des cycles supérieurs près de l’obtention de leur diplôme une occasion privilégiée de présenter un aperçu plus approfondi de leurs travaux de recherche.

Les candidats à la vitrine doivent :

  • avoir soutenu ou prévoir de soutenir leur mémoire ou leur thèse dans une université canadienne dans l’année qui suit ou précède la réunion
  • être le chercheur principal et l’auteur principal du travail présenté
  • être inscrit à la réunion

Les candidats éligibles qui souhaitent être considérés pour la vitrine doivent soumettre une demande complète à students@esc-sec.ca, en suivant les instructions ci-dessous. Les éléments 1 à 3 doivent être soumis dans un seul fichier PDF nommé sous la forme « NomDeFamille_GSSapplication.pdf« .

1) Soumettre un résumé de 250 mots décrivant la présentation proposée et mettant en valeur leur travail,

2) Soumettre un résumé d’une page (interligne simple, 12 points) de leur recherche, y compris la justification et l’importance du projet, la méthodologie et les résultats obtenus à ce jour,

3) Inclure un CV qui comprend une liste des présentations précédentes à des conférences et toute autre expérience de présentation.

4) Faire en sorte que le superviseur principal envoie par courriel une lettre de soutien dans un fichier PDF qui confirme la date prévue ou réelle de l’obtention du diplôme et commente la présentation proposée et les capacités de présentation et de recherche du candidat. Veuillez demander à votre directeur de recherche de nommer la lettre de soutien selon le format « NomDeFamille_GSSLetterOfSupport.pdf », où NomDeFamille est le nom de famille du candidat.

En plus des documents mentionnés ci-dessus, les candidats sont invités à – mais en aucun cas obligés de – soumettre des informations supplémentaires sur les facteurs qui ont pu influencer leur candidature (par exemple, les facteurs qui ont pu limiter l’accès aux possibilités de publication ou de présentation). Veuillez noter que les informations supplémentaires seront considérées comme confidentielles et ne seront consultées que par les membres du comité de sélection de la vitrine pour étudiants des cycles supérieurs.

La date limite de candidature pour la vitrine est le même jour que la date limite pour les communications à la réunion annuelle. Pour 2021, tous les documents de candidature doivent être soumis avant le 13 septembre 2021. Nous sélectionnerons jusqu’à quatre (4) récipiendaires. Tous les candidats seront informés de l’état de leur demande. Les candidats non retenus pour la vitrine verront leur présentation automatiquement déplacée vers une session orale du Prix du Président.

  • Les différences entre la vitrine et le concours du Prix du Président (PP) sont les suivantes :
  • La vitrine se déroulera dans un créneau horaire qui lui est propre; il n’y aura pas d’exposés en concurrence!
  • Les présentateurs de la vitrine disposent de plus de temps pour parler de leurs recherches (28 minutes au total, 25 pour la présentation et 3 pour les questions).
  • Les résumés des présentations de la vitrine seront publiés dans le Bulletin de la SEC, une publication libre d’accès reçue par tous les membres de la SEC.
  • Le processus de sélection pour la vitrine est compétitif (seuls les étudiants sélectionnés présentent leur exposé), contrairement au PP où tous les étudiants inscrits présentent leur exposé, mais où un seul par catégorie reçoit un prix.
  • Tous les présentateurs de la vitrine reçoivent des honoraires de 200 $.

Nous encourageons et accueillons les candidatures de toutes les personnes admissibles, en particulier celles qui s’identifient à des groupes sous-représentés dans les STIM et l’entomologie. La Société d’entomologie du Canada valorise la diversité sous toutes ses formes et cherche à représenter l’étendue de la recherche entomologique canadienne et les identités des chercheurs à travers sa vitrine pour les étudiants des cycles supérieurs. Cet événement se déroulera entièrement en ligne et permettra la participation de personnes du monde entier, sans aucun frais de déplacement, tout en permettant la diffusion rapide des avancées mondiales dans l’étude des insectes dans l’ensemble de la communauté scientifique. ESC Blog Classifieds – U Winnipeg MSc Opportunity Rearing Endangered Butterflies

MSc Graduate Student Opportunity in the Department of Biology, University of Winnipeg

Project title: Developing a laboratory rearing technique for the endangered Poweshiek skipperling and assessing the feasibility of introduction into tall grass prairie habitats in Manitoba.

Objectives: The Poweshiek skipperling (Oarisma poweshiek) is an Endangered butterfly species that is in critical danger of becoming extinct. Less than 500 individuals remain in the wild and the grasslands of southeastern Manitoba represent one of the species’ last strongholds. The species inhabits remnant patches of tall-grass prairie and in the past 10 years has greatly declined across its historical range. Working at both the Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg and the University of Winnipeg, the student will help develop laboratory rearing techniques and to determine the feasibility of reintroducing the Poweshiek skipperling into tall grass prairie sites where it has been extirpated or new potential prairie habitat. The student will study life history factors (such as mortality and survivorship of various development stages) and evaluate potential tall grass prairie sites for reintroduction. This study is in coordination with the University of Winnipeg, Assiniboine Park Zoo, and Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC).

Don’t read this article

I will admit that the headline was thoroughly and completely “click bait”. That’s because I was worried that “The new ESC Science Policy Committee and its mandate” would have you move along to the next article. And I hope that giving you the goods now on what this article is about doesn’t cause that right… now.

For those of you who are still with me, and I hope that is a majority of our members, I am aware that policy is not generally considered an exciting topic. But in this era of climate change, environmental degradation, increasing population pressure on our agricultural and silvicultural output, emergent and spreading vector-borne diseases, research funding challenges, and rapidly shifting politics in Canada and many of our largest trading partners, we as entomologists cannot merely sit back and let policy happen. We need to engage with policy makers to encourage careful decision making with the long view in mind.

Our diverse Society membership has an equally diverse set of skills and perspectives to offer to Canadians and the rest of the world. But engagement can only happen if we are willing to put fingers on the pulse of various issues, and to collaboratively marshal responses to issues as they begin to emerge. In other words, we can only be effective if we are able to anticipate in time and react with collective care and wisdom.

Over the past many years, the ESC has maintained a Science Policy and Education Committee. That committee has been effective in many areas including over the past several years:

  • expressing concern to the federal government about travel restrictions on federal scientists wishing to attend ESC meetings,
  • encouraging the continued support of the Experimental Lakes Area,
  • responding to NSERC consultations, and
  • drafting the ESC Policy Statement on Biodiversity Access and Benefit Sharing which was later adopted by our Society.

However, because the combination of both public education and public policy was a substantial and growing mandate, the ESC Executive Council Committee decided in 2015 to split the committee into two, each part taking care of one of the two former aspects.

In October 2016 I was asked to chair and help to formulate the new ESC Science Policy Committee. Your committee now consists of (in alphabetical order):

  • Patrice Bouchard (ESC First VP, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada)
  • Crystal Ernst (appointed member, postdoctoral fellow at Simon Fraser University)
  • Neil Holliday, (ESC President, ex officio committee member, University of Manitoba)
  • Dezene Huber (appointed member as academic representative, Chair 2016/2017, University of Northern British Columbia)
  • Fiona Hunter (ESC Second VP, Brock University)
  • Rachel Rix (appointed member and student and early professional representative, Dalhousie University)
  • Amanda Roe (appointed member as government representative, Natural Resources Canada – Canadian Forest Service)

Each executive member’s term is specified by their ESC executive term. Each appointed member is a member for up to 3 years. The Chair position is appointed on a yearly basis. The terms of reference specify that the committee should contain members “who (represent) the Student (and Early Professional) Affairs Committee, and preferably one professional entomologist employed in government service and one employed in academia.”

We are officially tasked “(t)o monitor government, industry and NGO science policies, to advise the Society when the science of entomology and our Members are affected, and to undertake tasks assigned by the Board that are designed to interpret, guide, or shift science policy.”

We are now working on putting together an agenda, and have started to work on a few items. For instance, you may recall an eBlast requesting participation in Canada’s Fundamental Science Review that was initiated by Hon. Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science. We hope that some of you took the opportunity to send your thoughts to the federal government.

As we develop an agenda, we would like to consult with you, the ESC membership. Please tell us:

  • What policy-related issues do you see emerging in your area of study, your realm of employment, or in the place that you live?
  • How might the ESC Science Policy Committee integrate better with your concerns and those of the rest of the membership? 
  • How can our Society be more consultative and responsive to the membership and to issues as they arise?
  • Who are the people and organizations with which ESC should be working closely on science policy issues?
  • How can you be a part of science policy development, particularly as it relates to entomological practice and service in Canada and abroad?

ESC Blog Classifieds – Indigenous Scholar, Assistant Professor @ University of Manitoba

The Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, University of Manitoba invites applications from Indigenous (e.g., First Nations, Métis, Inuit) Scholars for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2017, or as soon as possible thereafter, in one of the following broad disciplines: Agricultural Business/Economics; Food/Nutritional Sciences; or Agricultural Production/Ecology. Identification of a specific Department (Agribusiness and Agricultural Economics, Animal Science, Biosystems Engineering, Entomology, Food Science, Human Nutritional Sciences, Plant Science, Soil Science) will be based on the area of specialty of the successful candidate. The position will be weighted at approximately 45% teaching, 40% research and 15% service/outreach. Qualified applicants must possess: a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline; a record of independent research as demonstrated by scholarly publications; the potential for developing an active externally-funded research program including supervision of graduate students; demonstrated ability or potential for excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching; and excellent oral and written communication skills. The successful candidate will be required to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of expertise with inclusion of Indigenous perspectives and approaches. We also envisage that the Scholar will work closely with other instructors to help include Indigenous knowledge and perspectives for all students.
